Loving Matisse has become something of a millennial cliche. Along with a monstera deliciosa (guilty), a mid-century bar cart (also guilty) and a copy of Tom Ford’s coffee table book (you guessed it, guilty), Matisse prints have been having a serious moment these past few years.

The hype is well deserved – Matisse is one of the leading figures in modern art, after all. So, if you love Matisse’s use of color, shape and abstract expressionism, check out these 13 artists whose work has the same je ne sais quoi – and will pair perfectly with that Blue Nudes print you love so much.

1. Em McLeod

If you’re a fan of Matisse’s cut-out work done in the later years of his life, let us introduce you to Bundjalung-based artist Em McLeod. Em’s art is brought to life with an earthy blend of acrylic paint and portrays intuitive, free-flowing compositions. Although her work is in a different medium to Matisse’s later creations, the organic shapes and block colors in her tonal pieces are reminiscent of his iconic works.

2. Van Lanigh

Van Lanigh is a painter, photographer, and sculptor based in the Netherlands who describes her art as an unusual blend of abstractionism, figurative art, and surrealism. Her works often depict vibrant portraits in technicolor settings, using contrasting acrylic colors to define shapes and landscapes.

3. Hannah Carrick

Another artist whose works extend beyond the canvases they’re painted on is Lutruwita-based artist and art therapist, Lauren Cassar. Her intimate work contemplates the meeting of two contrary experiences; the domestic and the wild, kindred to Matisse’s earlier works portraying organic landscapes in abstract ways.

8. Xander Holliday

Los Angeles-based fine artist Jessalyn Brooks creates distinctive, strong silhouettes of the female form. Drawing inspiration from the geometric lines of Cubism, she works out of the same studio she's lived in for ten years. Using oil on canvas or pencil on paper to incorporate elements of passion, the dualities of creation, and her own vision of women’s bodies, Jessalyn's stunning pieces remind us of a modern-day Matisse.

Based in Singapore, Ripple Root is the artist moniker of Liquan Liew and Estella Ng. The duo collaborate to create carefree works depicting nature and wildlife. Using bold strokes and vibrant colors, their work is reminiscent of Matisse’s fauvism years when he painted French landscapes in the summer.
