9 Genius TikTok Cleaning Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew About Earlier
These hacks will make your life easier and have your home looking (and smelling) a million times better.
TikTok has become the go-to place for a plethora of hacks, including genius beauty tips and life-changing sleep tricks. To add to this, the social media platform has also gained a reputation as a resource for revolutionary cleaning hacks that will make your life easier and have your home looking (and smelling) a million times better.
From removing pet hair from your carpet to cleaning stained food containers, we've rounded up some brilliant home cleaning hacks from TikTok that we can't get enough of.
1. Removing stickers
We needed to start off with this one because we've wasted way too much of our time trying to solve this problem.
So, you have a sticker to remove from a mirror, window or any type of product — you start to pick away at a corner, go to pull it and... it breaks off, so you're left picking at it so much so you begin to damage the surface underneath. Or, even if you get a clean lift, you're still left with that annoying sticky residue, which is another nightmare to clean.
However, TikTok user @acleanbee's technique makes removing stickers an actual joy. Yes, really. She simply heats the sticker with a hairdryer so the glue is melted. Once hot, she uses a knife or other sharp object to carefully lift one corner and then peels it off.
2. Cleaning oven rack
Most of us are guilty of having oven racks that are covered in burnt bits. And when we do go to scrub them clean, it can require a bit of elbow grease and time. Cleaning guru Chantel Mila has a much easier solution that requires very little effort.
Simply lay an old towel in a bath (you could use your shower or a large sink) and soak the oven racks in hot water. Add one scoop of laundry powder and leave them to soak overnight. Voilà! Now you’re left with shining oven racks.
3. Cleaning a kitchen sink drain naturally
Another hack from @acleanbee is cleaning a kitchen sink drain with products you have on hand. She firstly sprinkles baking soda into the drain, dispenses some dish soap onto the baking soda and then grabs a toothbrush and starts scrubbing away. The baking soda and soap create a thick paste.
She then pours distilled white vinegar into the drain, which creates a foam reaction. This is then followed by pouring boiling hot water down the drain – it's as easy as that!
4. Cleaning a sofa
Is your sofa looking a little lacklustre? Using a pan lid to clean upholstery might sound odd, but this TikTok hack has been doing the rounds as of late. It promises to neutralise odours and freshen sofas. The hack involves dissolving a dishwashing tablet into a bowl of water, soaking a microfibre cloth in the solution and then wrapping it around a pot lid, then wiping down your sofa. We love the idea of the pan lid here, but think upholstery cleaner is a safer bet than a detergent pod for keeping your sofa fabric safe!
5. Cleaning stained plastic containers
Do you have plastic containers that are stained from previous foods, which you simply can't remove no matter how many times you wash them? @adikempler might have the answer to your woes.
All you need to do is pour some washing liquid into the container, add some warm water along with a few bits of paper towel (yes, you read that correctly), and pop the lid on. Then, vigorously shake the container for about a minute. Take the lid off, rinse out the water and your container should look good as new.
6. Removing tarnish from cutlery
This hack from @carolina.mccauley seems so simple it feels like it wouldn't be true, but alas it is! If you have tarnished cutlery that needs shining up, simply add a ball of aluminium foil to the cutlery tray and run your normal dishwashing cycle. The reaction between ingredients in the dishwasher detergent and the foil will lift the tarnish from your silverware.
7. Cleaning your toaster
This one will be very obvious to some and downright shocking to others. Did you know your toaster has a crumb-collecting tray at the bottom? You can now say goodbye to the days of flipping your toaster upside down and shaking it in the hopes the crumbs will escape.
8. Getting hair out of carpet
This is especially important when you have pets and sometimes a vacuum isn't powerful enough to pick them all up. Instead, @annrussell03 shares that you should use a rubber broom or a wet cloth to brush the hairs out of your carpet. Then you can just vacuum them up! Doing either of these techniques won't ruin your carpets by pulling out the carpet fibres as well.
9. DIY bath cleaner
Scrubbing a bath is an annoying and awkward task. But Chantel Mila's hack is here to save you some time and your back a workout. Her DIY cleaning mix combines warm white vinegar and dishwashing liquid. She pours the liquid around the surface of the bath, leaves it for 15 minutes and then wipes it down. Say hello to a sparkling tub!
