With the Hollywood writer’s strike well and truly behind us, the show can finally go on! Actually, make that shows, and ten of them. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated release of both the Beetlejuice sequel and Wicked have devout fans in meltdown mode, convinced they’d never see the day after waiting literal decades for the news.
So, renew those movie memberships and get your snack bar order ready, because this year is set for the big screen. Here are the films we can’t wait to see in 2024.
1. Drive-Away Dolls
Directed by one-part of the Coen Brothers duo (the Ethan part), Drive-Away Dolls is a comedy thriller starring Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as friends Jamie and Marian. Down and out and looking for a fresh start, they embark on a road trip to Tallahassee, of all places. But thanks to a run in with some clumsy criminals, they end up in more trouble than when they left.
2. Dune: Part Two
Let’s be real, Dune: Part One was essentially one epically long, spaceship docking, giant worm weaving set up to its sequel. Starring Timothée Chalamet, Javier Bardem, and Zendaya (hopefully with much more screen time), Dune: Part Two promises to be just as cinematically spectacular but with much more spectacle.
3. Mickey 17
Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho is back this March after stunning the world with his brilliant film, Parasite, in 2019. Featuring an all-star cast including Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, this screen adaptation of the sci-fi novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton takes us on an expedition to the ice world Niflheim.
4. Civil War
A24 has become an unstoppable force in entertainment, growing from an indie start-up to one of the most successful film and television production/distribution houses in the biz. Civil War boasts their biggest budget yet, set in a near-future America amidst a new civil war, brought to life with an incredible cast including actual husband and wife couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons.
5. Challengers
When the first trailer to Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers dropped last year, the internet went into overdrive. Originally set for a September 2023 release pre-writer’s strike, the film features Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist in inarguably the hottest love triangle since Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
6. Ballerina
Not all spinoffs succeed, but this John Wick offshoot directed by Len Wiseman looks ready to put up a fight. Hungry for revenge against those who killed her family, Ana de Armas plays a young assassin trained at the ballet school seen in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Keanu also features in the film, but whether he puts on any pointe shoes remains to be seen.
7. It Ends With Us
Also gracing the big screen ths year is the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestselling book, It Ends With Us. Dubbed ‘CoHo’ by her cult-like following, Hoover is known as the queen of BookTok (TikTok’s reading community). Starring Blake Lively as Boston flower shop owner, Lily, the film follows her journey through grief over her abusive father’s death and the complications that come with the return of her high school love, Atlas.
8. A Quiet Place: Day One
The post-apocalyptic sci-fi saga of ‘A Quiet Place’ continues, this time following new characters played by Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, and Alex Wolff. Though details are sparse, we’re led to assume this third instalment will tell the story of how monsters first arrived on Earth on ‘Day One.’
9. Beetlejuice 2
In the famous words of Beetlejuice, “It’s showtime!” For fans of one of the most iconic and adored '80s films of all time, a sequel to this Tim Burton classic spells either delight or despair. How can you improve on perfect? In September, we’ll find out. Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara have all reprised their roles from the original, with everyone’s favorite goth girl, Jenna Ortega, also along for the ride.
10. Wicked: Part One
Another film a long time in the making, Wicked will finally grace our screens toward the end of 2024. In development for a decade, the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical will be split into two parts, with Michelle Yeoh making her singing debut as Madame Morrible, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, and Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good.
