The Ultimate Guide to Dressing Your Bed This Summer
Prepare your bed for the toasty months ahead.
When we think of summer sleeps, images of afternoon naps and cozy Sunday mornings come to mind. It’s a season when everyone’s pace slows down a notch, and the art of relaxation comes into focus. Naturally, in order to achieve this kind of bliss, your bedding should reflect the mood.
Dressing your bed for summer is all about the swaps – trading comfy fabrics for breathable materials, deeper palettes for airy colors, and an overall sense of weight that’s been lifted. If you’re currently switching gears in your home and need a few ideas on how to do this, continue below for our guide on curating the ultimate personal environment for the toasty months ahead.
1. Swap to Linen
When summer’s temperatures are high and humid, heat-retaining fabrics such as flannel and wool should be temporarily retired. Instead, reach for bedding crafted in breathable materials such as a luxurious linen. Our signature 100% French Flax Linen Bedding is buttery soft, pre-washed, and designed to last for years. Even better, linen is widely regarded as a hypoallergenic fabric, which means if you have sensitive skin you’ll be sleeping oh-so-soundly.
2. Pivot to Lighter Color Palettes
You know how on hot days if you wear deeply-hued clothing it can exacerbate the heat? The same applies to bedding. Dark colors absorb more heat from sources of light, which means it’s a good (read: excellent) idea to swap out inky bedding hues for brighter palettes.
3. Skip the Heavy Throws
As much as we live for a beautiful throw, when the forecast reads scorching, there’s no place for a heavy blanket on your bed. If you prefer to have at least one other layer aside from your duvet or comforter, invest in a lightweight quilt or linen throw to add a finishing touch.
4. Choose Temperature-Regulating Duvet Inserts
In recent years, there have been several developments with regards to bedding that help to mitigate the heat, from cooling mattress toppers to temperature-regulating duvet inserts. Speaking of the latter, look for those made with naturally wicking materials to stave off excess moisture, like this one..
5. Minimize Your Layers
This one’s a bit obvious but it’s worth giving a callout – if you're finding yourself overheating throughout the night, scale down the bedding layers. You can fold your duvet in half and sleep with just the top sheet at night, or even minimize the number of pillows you sleep with. Ultimately, the less you have on your body the cooler you’ll be. If you're finding a duvet to be too much, opt for something lighter like one of our Quilts.
6. Keep It Loose
If you’re big on tucking the sheets tightly into the bed frame, you might want to reconsider. During the summer, allowing your bedding to take on a looser, free-flowing form is likely to help the air flow into your sleep space. Plus, the look feels bohemian and well-suited for scorching summer nights.
