6 New Shows We Can’t Wait to Watch in July
Streaming might be winding down this month – but every new show is worth tuning in for.
Finally! After months and months of new television releases giving us decision anxiety, July is a relatively quiet time for streaming. But that doesn’t mean that there aren't plenty of exciting new things to watch.
Whether it’s returning seasons of some of our previous favourites like the finale of The Witcher, or star-studded crime thrillers with Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman in Lioness, there are plenty of exciting new releases coming out that are worthing of staying home on a Saturday night for.
Ahead are 6 new shows we’ll be watching in July.
1. The Summer I Turned Pretty
Where can I watch it? On Prime Video
Based on the beloved teen novel series by Jenny Han – she of To All The Boys I Loved Before fame – this Prime binge watch followed two families as they spent a memorable summer at the fictional Cousins Beach, in Massachusetts. Our protagonist Belly loves coming to this family home where she made so many memories, but this past summer, where the brothers Conrad and Jeremiah both declared their love for her, got all a little confusing. This summer, Belly is once again torn between these two boys, and the stakes are even higher this time, with illness and drama threatening the house the family loves so much. If you loved season one – and we adored it – we bet you’ll be bingeing this new season in record time.
2. Sweet Magnolias
Where can I watch it? On Netflix
The third season of Sweet Magnolias is coming this month. The very popular romance series follows three best friends in a South Carolina town whose friendship is the steady part of their lives, against a backdrop of work, family, romance and life. If you’re in need of a comforting show that feels familiar to classics like Gilmore Girls, Friday Night Lights, and Grace and Frankie, Sweet Magnolias is sure to hit the spot.
3. Survival of the Thickest
Where can I watch it? On Netflix
This new comedy series looks very promising. You might recognise comedian Michelle Buteau – she was the scene-stealing best friend in Always Be My Maybe, and has starred in Someone Great and Russian Doll, as well as hosting her own comedy specials, podcasts, and reality series. She’s the star of this Netflix show, which is based on her own memoir with a few twists and changes, as it follows a young, plus size woman trying to make it in the world of fashion in New York. We love the trailer, and think this will be a perfect weekend binge.
4. Minx
Where can I watch it? On Hulu
The charming Minx was another one of our surprise 2022 favourites, and it’s back for season two this month on Stan. The first season followed Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), the editor of a feminist magazine in partnership with Doug (Jake Johnson), whose experience is largely in erotic publications. Things are going so well in season two: new contracts, new staff members, new issues, new readers. But you know how it goes, the second things start to go well, that’s when it all risks falling apart. What will happen to the Minx team this season? We’ll definitely be tuning in for season two.
5. Lioness
Where can I watch it? On Paramount+
Zoe Saldana. Nicole Kidman. What more do you need to know? This new series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan follows the women at the forefront of the war on terror. A secret US Military program called Lioness, overseen by Kaitlyn Meade (Kidman), recruits Joe (Saldana) to go undercover as part of a long running and crucial operation to thwart the next terror attack on US soil. Kidman and Saldana are both producers on the series as well as stars, and the show will also feature an appearance from Morgan Freeman. Prestige television doesn’t get more prestige than this.
6. The Witcher, Season 3 Volume 2
Where can I watch it? On Netflix
Lovers of Henry Cavill… and the hit fantasy television series The Witcher – unite! The show is back for a third season and will be Cavill's final season as Geralt before Liam Hemsworth steps into the role. For those who are just catching up now, the fantasy show is about a group of magically-enhanced monster hunters-for-hire known as ‘Witchers’. The show follows Geralt of Rivia (AKA Henry Cavill), as he navigates the landscape of warring nations, races, magic users, and monsters. The third season is set to air in late June, and we couldn't be more excited to see what the finale has to offer.
