Wildflower Blue Is Officially 2023’s Coolest Interior Design Color
This vibrant cornflower blue is both calming and uplifting.
The ‘world's most popular color’ is notoriously one of the easiest hues to introduce to a home’s interior scheme. Blue – the answer the majority of us respond to ‘What’s your favourite color?’ with – is soothing on the eye, natural-looking, and can bring subtle interest into a home.
Whether you’re partial to coastal style, you want to add subtle color to your home, or you simply enjoy a soothing interior scheme, blue has always proven to be a safe, versatile, and timeless option in interior design. And in 2023, Wildflower blue – a vibrant yet soothing shade – is set to make waves in interior design.
Why is blue so popular?
A 2010 study by Palmer and Schloss found that blue’s universal appeal can largely be attributed to the positive connotations we have with things that are blue – like the sky and ocean. "It tells us that our experiences with the world are constantly influencing the way we view and interpret (colour),” Schloss explains.
Colour psychology suggests that certain colours can have an effect on a person's mood, emotions, and behaviours. Blue calls to mind feelings of calmness and relaxation and is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly. It comes as no surprise then, that shades of blue are the perfect tones to incorporate into your bedroom's design to keep things looking and feeling calm.
Blue as a trend
There's no denying that blue is a colour that will always be in style. French artist Yves Klein's famous 'International Klein Blue' for example will forever be a source of inspiration and a popular color choice for designers and aesthetes alike.
But over the years we’ve seen different tones be the shade du jour. From Pantone’s 2000 Color of the Year 'Cerulean’, to the 2020 Color of the year ‘Classic Blue,’ there is typically one or two tones that dominate the design world.
In 2023, ocean blues are set to reign supreme with object designer Gustaf Westman and artist Charlie Bennell both being known to favor these blues in their works.
Wildflower blue in the home
For this season, we will be celebrating Wildflower blue, a coastal and serene tone that combines the rich, natural tones of Australia’s native flora with an oceanic ease. This vibrant cornflower blue is both calming and uplifting.
This unique shade is equally soothing as it is bright and brings energy into a home’s interior. There are countless ways you could incorporate this color into a room, be it via cushion covers, bedding, a feature wall, coffee table books, tableware, bathroom tiles, or art.
There are few, if any, colors that don't pair well with this shade. It can be paired with other vibrant hues like Peach or red and more muted neutral tones like Oatmeal and gray. When utilising it in your bedroom, we would recommend pairing it with Limoncello for a Mediterranean summer look, or White for a fresh, clean aesthetic. The world is your oyster with this oceanic tone.
